Risk and resilience, taken seriously.

About Kybernetix

Kybernetix is a single-principal risk and resilience advisory practice based in Cambridge, New Zealand. The practice was established in 2024 and serves boards and executive teams in asset-intensive and regulated firms across New Zealand and Australia.

The Principal

Daniel F. Norris, DBA, MBA, MInstD, is the principal of Kybernetix. He holds a current senior executive role in operational risk at a large New Zealand industrial firm. He completed his Doctor of Business Administration at the University of Otago, with a thesis combining Nicholas Rescher’s systematising reasoning for irreducible trade-offs (aporia) with Aristotelian phronesis, applied to complex operational risk in high-reliability industry.

Prior senior roles in industry span operations, engineering, risk, and assurance leadership in dairy processing, primary processing, manufacturing, and construction. He is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors and lectures at the University of Otago. His peer-reviewed work appears in Systems Research and Behavioural Science, Safety Science, Decision Science, and Kybernetes. He trades as Chuck Norris in client-facing communication; legal and academic identity is Daniel F. Norris.

The Practice

The Kybernetix Difference

We integrate risk management and operational resilience as a single capability. The integration is methodological, not cosmetic. The same intellectual apparatus that grounds our published academic work makes the integration possible in practice. We work to a higher analytical standard than is usual in the New Zealand and Australian advisory market. The depth comes from a combination of operational executive experience and a research doctorate in complex risk and critical systems thinking. Our work is rigorous because it is grounded in both operational reality and methodological depth. We are willing to deliver findings the client did not want to hear. Independence is preserved through a single-principal model, no software resale agreements, no audit firm ties, and no insurance broking arrangements. Our reputational asset is judgement, not a deck of slides.

How We Work

Four families of engagement. Frameworks and Architecture for firms standing up or rebuilding their risk function. Diagnostics and Reviews for firms that need an independent judgement on whether something is working. Counsel and Advisory for leaders who need someone to think with them, not deliver to them. Governance for boards that need risk and resilience capability in the room, not just on paper. Engagements are taken direct or under prime contracts with reputable management consulting and engineering firms where capacity and methodology fit permit.

Independence

The practice is structurally independent. Single principal. No parent firm. No software resale agreements. No audit firm ties. No insurance broking arrangements. The conflicts policy is published in full on this site.

The Approach

The practice draws on four traditions, named because they are the traditions and not the only ones we read.

  • Critical Systems Thinking, in the lineage of Mike Jackson, Gerald Midgley, Robert Flood, Werner Ulrich, Stafford Beer, and Peter Checkland. We use Critical Systems Practice in its Mode 2 form as the integrating method. The Viable System Model, Soft Systems Methodology, and Critical Systems Heuristics are tools we deploy where the problem fits.
  • Aporetic reasoning in the tradition of Nicholas Rescher. Rescher’s systematising reasoning provides the disciplined approach to inquiry under uncertainty that grounds our diagnostic and review work. We are an active research collaborator with Associate Professor Jeff Foote on the integration of Rescher’s systematising reasoning with evaporating cloud theory.
  • Aristotelian phronesis. Practical wisdom is the missing capability in most risk leadership. We treat phronesis as the unit of value for our counsel and advisory work.
  • The Perrow, Rasmussen, Woods, Hopkins, Rae lineage in safety science. We are deliberate about the safety science we read and the safety science we do not. We align with the serious end of the discipline. We do not align with HOP or HECA.

Active research collaborations include co-authored work with Professor Emeritus Mike C. Jackson on Daoist Critical Systems Leadership, with Associate Professor Jeff Foote on Rescherian systematising reasoning, and with Ingrid Årstad on Rescherian canons of inquiry in safety science.

Positions on Contested Questions

  • ISO 31000 is a compliance floor, not a competitive advantage. The standard does necessary work; it does not, by itself, deliver the capability boards need.
  • Severity-and-tolerance framing is more useful than likelihood-and-consequence colour grids for board reporting on tail risk. The colour grid hides the question the board needs to answer.
  • Risk and resilience are one capability, not two. The siloing of the two functions in most firms is a historical accident, not a methodological commitment.
  • Most useful safety work happens at the boundary between safety, risk, and operations. Pure safety practice that is not in conversation with risk and operations is brittle.

Kybernetix Risk and Resilience Advisory

First conversations with Kybernetix are typically a no-obligation thirty-minute call. The purpose of this initial discussion is to understand the problem or problems you are working on and whether Kybernetix could be the right fit for you and/or your organisation.
