Dan Norris, Principal
Dan Norris, DBA, MBA, MInstD
Dr Daniel (Dan) Norris is the founder and sole principal of Kybernetix. Dan holds a DBA from the University of Otago, an MBA from University of Adelaide, and has held various senior global and executive roles in risk and resilience, chemical process safety, industrial manufacturing and engineering, transformation consulting in follow on to his formative years as an engineering officer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Where Dan Sits in the Field
Dan is unusual in combining a research doctorate in complex operational risk with current senior executive responsibility in high-reliability operations. The combination is a point of difference for Dan and for Kybernetix: methodological depth without operational currency tends toward abstraction, and operational currency without methodological depth tends toward improvisation. The Kybernetix work sits in the intersection, blending and balancing.
Brief Biography
Dan completed his Doctor of Business Administration at the University of Otago. The thesis integrated Nicholas Rescher’s systematising reasoning for aporetics with Aristotelian phronesis, applied to complex operational risk in high-reliability industry. He holds an MBA from the University of Adelaide and is a Member of the Institute of Directors of New Zealand.
His career began as an avionics engineering officer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He moved into industry in operations, engineering, and assurance leadership roles, then into risk and resilience leadership at executive level. His current senior executive role is General Manager, Risk at a large New Zealand industrial firm. Prior senior roles span dairy and food processing, primary processing, manufacturing, construction, and global transformation consulting. He has worked across the New Zealand, Australian, and broader Asia-Pacific markets.
He lectures at the University of Otago on strategy, sustainability, risk and governance, and systems thinking. He maintains an active peer-reviewed publishing record and a small set of named research collaborations with senior figures in the systems thinking and safety science traditions.
Academic and Research
Dan’s peer-reviewed work appears in Systems Research and Behavioural Science, Safety Science, Decision Science, and Kybernetes. He works in four interlocking traditions: Critical Systems Thinking in the lineage of Jackson, Midgley, Flood, Ulrich, Beer, and Checkland; aporetic reasoning in the tradition of Nicholas Rescher; Aristotelian phronesis as practical wisdom for risk leadership; and unapologetically the Perrow, Rasmussen, Woods, Hopkins, Le Coze and Rae lineage in safety science.
Operations and Governance
Thirty years of operational and risk leadership across asset-intensive, high-reliability, and regulated organisations and sectors, including dairy and food processing, primary processing, manufacturing, construction, aerospace, MRO and chemical process safety. Operational leadership across facility, plants and programmes has included accountability for catastrophic-loss-relevant controls, integrated assurance, engineering diligence and authority and incident response and preparedness.
Governance experience includes executive reporting, chairing sub-committee work and independent advisory roles focused on risk and resilience matters. The governance practice is deliberately limited work here, with a maximum of two governance appointments at any one time to preserve the integrity of work and the counsel offered through the rest of the practices.
